Intestine - Diseases

The intestine is a long, muscular tube that forms part of the digestive system. It is divided into two main parts: the small intestine and the large intestine.

The small intestine is where most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs. It is about 20 feet long in adults and is divided into three parts: the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum. The duodenum receives partially digested food from the stomach and mixes it with digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver before passing it on to the jejunum and ileum.

The large intestine, also known as the colon, is about 5 feet long in adults and absorbs water and electrolytes from the remaining undigested food. It then forms feces and stores them until they are eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus.

The intestine is lined with a mucous membrane that contains numerous small glands, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. The walls of the intestine are composed of smooth muscle that contracts and relaxes to move food through the digestive system. The intestine is also home to a complex ecosystem of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota, that play important roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function.
