Bile ducts - Diseases

Bile ducts are tube-like structures that transport bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. Bile is a greenish-yellow fluid that helps to digest fats by breaking them down into smaller particles that can be absorbed by the body. The bile ducts are part of the biliary system, which includes the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

There are two types of bile ducts: intrahepatic bile ducts and extrahepatic bile ducts. Intrahepatic bile ducts are located within the liver, while extrahepatic bile ducts are located outside the liver. The extrahepatic bile ducts include the common hepatic duct, which carries bile from the liver, and the common bile duct, which carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine.

Blockage or damage to the bile ducts can lead to various conditions, such as bile duct stones, cholangitis, or primary sclerosing cholangitis. These conditions can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment may involve medication, surgical procedures, or a combination of both, depending on the underlying cause of the problem.
