Nasal cavity - Diseases

The nasal cavity is a large, air-filled space located within the skull, behind the nose and above the mouth. It is lined with a thin layer of mucus and tiny hairs called cilia, which help to filter and humidify the air as it passes through the nasal cavity. The nasal cavity is also responsible for several important functions, including:

  1. Smell: The lining of the nasal cavity contains specialized cells called olfactory receptors, which are responsible for detecting different smells.
  2. Breathing: The nasal cavity helps to warm and moisten the air as it enters the body, making it easier to breathe.
  3. Speech: The nasal cavity, along with the mouth and throat, is essential for forming words and speaking.

The nasal cavity is divided into two halves by a septum, which is made of bone and cartilage. Each half of the nasal cavity contains several structures, including:

  1. Conchae: These are bony structures that protrude into the nasal cavity and help to increase its surface area, allowing for greater filtration and humidification of the air.
  2. Sinuses: The nasal cavity is connected to several air-filled cavities in the skull, called sinuses. These cavities help to lighten the weight of the skull and may also play a role in sound resonance.

Disorders of the nasal cavity can include conditions such as allergies, sinusitis, and nasal polyps. Proper nasal hygiene, including regular cleaning and avoiding irritants, can help to prevent these conditions and maintain overall nasal health.
