Gallbladder - Diseases

The gallbladder is a small organ located on the right side of the body, just under the liver. Its main function is to store and release bile, a fluid that helps with digestion. When food enters the small intestine, the gallbladder contracts and releases bile into the digestive tract through the common bile duct.

Bile is produced by the liver and contains substances like bile salts, cholesterol, and bilirubin. It helps break down fats and aids in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. Without bile, the body would have a difficult time digesting fats and absorbing essential nutrients.

Gallstones are a common condition that can develop in the gallbladder when the bile contains too much cholesterol or bilirubin. These stones can cause blockages in the ducts, leading to pain, inflammation, and infection. In some cases, the gallbladder may need to be surgically removed, a procedure known as a cholecystectomy.
