Bladder - Diseases

The bladder is a muscular sac located in the lower abdomen that stores urine until it is ready to be eliminated from the body through the urethra. It is part of the urinary system, which also includes the kidneys, ureters, and urethra.

The bladder has a capacity of about 300-500 milliliters of urine in adults, although this can vary depending on age, gender, and other factors. When the bladder is about half full, the nerves in the bladder wall send signals to the brain that indicate the need to urinate.

The bladder is made up of several layers of smooth muscle tissue that allow it to stretch and contract to accommodate varying volumes of urine. The inner lining of the bladder, known as the urothelium, is a specialized type of tissue that is able to withstand the potentially harmful effects of urine.

Diseases and conditions that can affect the bladder include urinary tract infections, bladder cancer, interstitial cystitis, and bladder stones. Symptoms of bladder problems may include pain or discomfort during urination, frequent urination, urgency, and incontinence. Treatment for bladder disorders may involve medications, lifestyle changes, or surgery, depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.
