Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are infections that affect the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and underlying muscles. These infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites and can range from mild to severe.

The most common types of SSTIs include:

1. Cellulitis: A bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue.
2. Impetigo: A bacterial infection of the skin, most common in children.
3. Folliculitis: An infection of the hair follicles, which can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
4. Abscess: A collection of pus that forms under the skin or in an organ.
5. Necrotizing fasciitis: A serious bacterial infection that affects the deeper layers of the skin and soft tissues.

Treatment of SSTIs depends on the type and severity of the infection. Mild infections can often be treated with topical or oral antibiotics, while more severe infections may require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics. Pain relief, wound care, and surgical drainage may also be necessary in some cases. Prevention measures include good hygiene, wound care, and avoiding contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects.
