Testicle - Diseases

The testicle (also known as testis) is the male reproductive gland located in the scrotum, a sac of skin below the penis. The testicles produce and store sperm, the male reproductive cells that fertilize a female egg during sexual reproduction.

In addition to producing sperm, the testicles also produce the male sex hormone testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, such as increased muscle mass, body hair, and a deeper voice.

The testicles are roughly the size of a golf ball and are covered by a protective layer of tissue called the tunica albuginea. The inside of the testicle is filled with small tubes called seminiferous tubules, where sperm are produced. Sperm are then transported to the epididymis, a coiled tube located on the back of the testicle, where they mature and are stored until ejaculation.

Testicular cancer is a relatively rare but serious condition that occurs when cells in the testicle begin to grow and divide uncontrollably. It is most common in young and middle-aged men, and symptoms may include a lump or swelling in the testicle, pain or discomfort in the testicle or scrotum, and a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. Treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, depending on the type and stage of the cancer. Regular self-exams and check-ups with a healthcare provider can help detect testicular cancer early and increase the chances of successful treatment.
