Iris Eye - Diseases

The iris is a circular, pigmented structure located in the front part of the eye, between the cornea and the lens. It is responsible for regulating the amount of light that enters the eye, thus controlling the size of the pupil.

The iris is composed of two layers of smooth muscle that are arranged in circular and radial patterns. These muscles work together to control the size of the pupil, which allows more or less light to enter the eye.

The color of the iris is determined by the amount and distribution of pigment within its layers. Different amounts and types of pigment can result in a range of colors, from blue and green to brown and black.

Various factors can affect iris function, including injury, disease, and medications. For example, some medications may cause the pupil to become smaller or larger, while certain eye diseases may cause the iris to lose its ability to regulate pupil size.

Changes in the color or appearance of the iris may also be a sign of underlying health conditions, such as inflammation, infection, or tumors.

Regular eye exams with an eye doctor can help detect and manage conditions that may affect the iris and other structures of the eye.
