Transient ischaemic attack - Generics

A transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, is a temporary interruption in blood flow to the brain, which can cause symptoms similar to a stroke. TIAs typically last for a few minutes up to an hour, and the symptoms usually disappear on their own. However, they should still be taken seriously, as they can be a warning sign of a future stroke.

The symptoms of a TIA may include sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; difficulty speaking or understanding speech; vision problems in one or both eyes; dizziness or loss of balance; and a sudden, severe headache.

The causes of TIAs are similar to those of strokes and include atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of the arteries), blood clots, and bleeding in the brain. Risk factors for TIAs include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and a family history of stroke or TIA.

The diagnosis of a TIA typically involves a physical exam, neurological tests, and imaging studies such as a CT scan or MRI. Treatment may involve medication to prevent blood clots or lower blood pressure, as well as lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, improving diet, and increasing exercise.

If you experience symptoms of a TIA, it is important to seek medical attention immediately, as prompt treatment can help prevent a more serious stroke from occurring.
