Keratoconjunctivitis - Generics

Keratoconjunctivitis is an inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva, the transparent outer layer of the eye and the membrane that lines the inner eyelids.

There are several different types of keratoconjunctivitis, each with their own specific causes and symptoms. Some common types include:

  1. Viral keratoconjunctivitis: This type of keratoconjunctivitis is caused by a viral infection and is highly contagious. Symptoms may include redness, itching, tearing, and sensitivity to light.
  2. Bacterial keratoconjunctivitis: This type of keratoconjunctivitis is caused by a bacterial infection and is also highly contagious. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and discharge from the eye.
  3. Allergic keratoconjunctivitis: This type of keratoconjunctivitis is caused by an allergic reaction to substances such as pollen or pet dander. Symptoms may include redness, itching, tearing, and swelling.
  4. Giant papillary conjunctivitis: This type of keratoconjunctivitis is a reaction to contact lenses, and is characterized by the formation of large bumps on the inside of the eyelids. Symptoms may include itching, tearing, and redness.
  5. Exposure keratoconjunctivitis: This type of keratoconjunctivitis is caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or other sources. Symptoms may include redness, dryness, and sensitivity to light.

Treatment for keratoconjunctivitis depends on the underlying cause. Viral and bacterial keratoconjunctivitis may be treated with antiviral or antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic keratoconjunctivitis may be treated with antihistamines or other allergy medications. Treatment for giant papillary conjunctivitis may involve switching to a different type of contact lens or discontinuing use of contact lenses altogether. Prevention measures for exposure keratoconjunctivitis include wearing sunglasses or other protective eyewear that blocks UV radiation.

If you experience any symptoms of keratoconjunctivitis, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Left untreated, some types of keratoconjunctivitis can cause permanent damage to the cornea and vision loss.
