Bacterial vaginosis - Generics

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. It is not a sexually transmitted infection, but sexual activity can increase the risk of developing BV. The exact cause of BV is not well understood, but it is thought to be related to a disruption in the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina.

Symptoms of BV may include a thin white or gray vaginal discharge, a strong and unpleasant odor, itching or irritation around the vagina, and pain during sex or urination. However, many women with BV may not experience any symptoms at all.

Diagnosis of BV involves a pelvic exam and testing of a vaginal sample to check for the presence of the bacteria that cause BV. Treatment for BV usually involves the use of antibiotics, such as metronidazole or clindamycin, which can be taken orally or applied directly to the vagina in the form of a cream or gel. In some cases, BV may recur after treatment, and additional courses of antibiotics may be necessary.

Prevention of BV involves maintaining good hygiene, such as avoiding douching, using mild, unscented soaps and avoiding scented hygiene products, and wearing breathable underwear. Practicing safe sex, such as using condoms, can also reduce the risk of developing BV. Additionally, maintaining a healthy vaginal microbiome through the use of probiotics may help prevent BV.
