Bronchioles and smaller air passages - Diseases

Bronchioles are the smaller air passages that branch off from the bronchi and lead to the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. The bronchioles do not have cartilage in their walls, which allows them to constrict and dilate to regulate the flow of air in the lungs.

The bronchioles further branch into smaller air passages called terminal bronchioles, which lead to the alveoli. The walls of the terminal bronchioles are lined with clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli, where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs during respiration.

Diseases and conditions that can affect the bronchioles and smaller air passages include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis. Treatment for these conditions may involve medications, inhalers, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, or other specialized therapies, depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Preventive measures, such as avoiding tobacco smoke and other environmental irritants, can also help to reduce the risk of respiratory disorders.
