Glossitis is a condition that involves inflammation of the tongue. This inflammation can cause the tongue to become swollen, red, and painful. The tongue may also develop small bumps or sores, and the surface of the tongue may appear smooth or shiny.
There are many possible causes of glossitis, including:
Treatment for glossitis may depend on the underlying cause of the condition. For example, if the cause is a nutritional deficiency, treatment may involve supplements or changes to the diet. If an infection is a cause, medications such as antifungal or antiviral drugs may be prescribed. In some cases, an oral corticosteroid may be used to help reduce inflammation.
To prevent glossitis, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid irritants such as smoking or tobacco use. A healthy and balanced diet is also important to help prevent nutritional deficiencies that can contribute to glossitis. If glossitis develops, it is important to seek medical attention to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
