Canker sores are small, shallow, and often painful sores that can appear anywhere in the mouth. They are not contagious and are usually caused by stress, injury, or certain foods. They typically heal on their own within a week or two.
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are small fluid-filled blisters that typically appear on or around the lips. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious. Cold sores can be triggered by stress, illness, or sun exposure, and typically go away on their own within a few weeks.
Oral thrush is a fungal infection that can occur in the mouth and throat. It is most common in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or who are undergoing chemotherapy. Symptoms can include white patches on the tongue or inside of the cheeks, and a sore throat.
Treatment for mouth sores depends on the type and severity of the sore. Over-the-counter medications such as topical anesthetics or antimicrobial mouthwashes can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. In some cases, prescription medications may be necessary. It is important to see a healthcare provider if you have a mouth sore that does not go away after a few days or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or difficulty swallowing.
