Enterobiasis - Generics

Enterobiasis, also known as pinworm infection, is a parasitic infection caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis. It is one of the most common helminth infections worldwide, especially among children.

The infection is transmitted through the ingestion of eggs, which are typically spread through the fecal-oral route. The eggs are laid by adult female worms in the perianal region and can survive for several days on contaminated surfaces. When a person scratches the area, the eggs can be transferred to their hands, clothing, and bedding, and can be easily spread to others. The eggs hatch in the small intestine, and the larvae mature into adult worms in the colon.

Symptoms of enterobiasis may include itching around the anus, especially at night, as well as restlessness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. Some people may also experience abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the worms may migrate into the female genital tract, causing inflammation and other complications.

The diagnosis of enterobiasis is made by identifying the characteristic eggs on a tape test, in which a piece of transparent tape is applied to the perianal region and then examined under a microscope. Treatment typically involves a single dose of mebendazole or albendazole, which are effective in eliminating the worms and their eggs.

Prevention of enterobiasis involves practicing good hygiene, including frequent hand washing, washing bedding and clothing in hot water, and avoiding sharing personal items such as towels and toothbrushes. It is also important to treat all members of a household at the same time, as reinfection can occur easily.
