Ancylostomiasis - Generics

Ancylostomiasis, also known as hookworm infection, is a parasitic infection caused by the hookworms Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. These hookworms live in the small intestine of infected humans, where they attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood.

Ancylostomiasis is primarily acquired through contact with soil contaminated with hookworm larvae, typically in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. The larvae can penetrate the skin of bare feet, and infection can also occur through ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Symptoms of ancylostomiasis can include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and anemia. In severe cases, infection can lead to malnutrition and developmental delays in children. Chronic infections may cause stunted growth and cognitive impairment.

Diagnosis of ancylostomiasis is typically made through a stool sample test, which can detect the presence of hookworm eggs. Treatment involves the use of anthelmintic medications, such as albendazole or mebendazole, to kill the adult worms in the intestine. Iron supplements may also be prescribed to treat anemia.

Prevention of ancylostomiasis involves practicing good hygiene and sanitation, wearing shoes in areas with contaminated soil, and avoiding consumption of contaminated food and water. In areas where hookworm infection is endemic, regular deworming programs may also be implemented to reduce the prevalence of infection.
