Prostate - Diseases
The prostate is a small gland located in the male reproductive system, just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and is composed of glandular and muscular tissue.
The prostate gland produces a fluid that is a component of semen. This fluid helps to nourish and transport sperm during ejaculation. The production and secretion of prostate fluid is regulated by male hormones, particularly testosterone.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in men. It usually develops slowly and may not cause any symptoms in its early stages. However, as the cancer grows, it can cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, blood in the urine, and pain in the pelvic area. Prostate cancer can often be detected through routine screening tests, such as a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a digital rectal exam (DRE). Treatment for prostate cancer may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of these approaches.
Other conditions that can affect the prostate gland include prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate, and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. These conditions can also cause symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and pain in the pelvic area. Treatment for prostatitis and BPH may involve medications, lifestyle changes, or surgery.
