Wheezing - Generics

Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound that occurs when air flows through narrowed or constricted airways in the lungs, usually during breathing out (expiration). It is a common symptom of many respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia.

Other possible causes of wheezing include allergies, heart failure, and certain medications. Wheezing may also occur in response to physical activity, exposure to cold air or irritants, or emotional stress.

In addition to wheezing, people with respiratory conditions may also experience other symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness or pain, and fatigue. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and may require medical attention.

Treatment for wheezing depends on the underlying cause of the symptom. In cases of acute wheezing caused by asthma or other respiratory conditions, inhalers containing bronchodilators or corticosteroids may be prescribed to help open up the airways and reduce inflammation. Other medications, such as antihistamines or leukotriene inhibitors, may be prescribed for allergies or other underlying conditions.

For more severe cases of wheezing, hospitalization and oxygen therapy may be required. In rare cases, surgery may be necessary to remove obstructions from the airways.

It is important to seek medical attention if wheezing is persistent or severe, as it can be a sign of a serious underlying condition that requires prompt treatment.
