Transurethral prostatic resection - Generics

Transurethral prostatic resection (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in men.

During TURP, a surgeon inserts a long, thin tube called a resectoscope through the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body) to reach the prostate gland. The resectoscope contains a small camera that allows the surgeon to see inside the urethra and prostate gland, and a wire loop that is used to remove excess prostate tissue.

The surgeon then uses the wire loop to remove small pieces of prostate tissue, one at a time, until enough tissue has been removed to alleviate the symptoms of BPH. The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory for analysis to ensure that it is not cancerous.

TURP is typically performed under general or regional anesthesia and takes about 60-90 minutes to complete. After the procedure, a catheter may be placed in the bladder to drain urine for a day or two. Patients typically need to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days after the procedure and may experience some mild discomfort or pain during urination for several weeks afterwards.

TURP is a relatively safe and effective treatment for BPH, although there are some risks associated with the procedure, such as bleeding, infection, and difficulty urinating. Patients should discuss the risks and benefits of TURP with their healthcare provider before deciding whether to undergo the procedure.
