Pylorospasm is a condition characterized by the involuntary contraction or spasm of the pyloric sphincter, a ring-like muscle located at the bottom of the stomach that controls the flow of food into the small intestine. This condition can cause partial or complete obstruction of the gastric outlet, resulting in symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Pylorospasm can be caused by a variety of factors, including underlying medical conditions such as peptic ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), medications, or neurological disorders. In some cases, the exact cause may be unknown.

Diagnosis of pylorospasm typically involves a physical exam and medical history, as well as imaging tests such as an upper endoscopy or barium swallow study to evaluate the structure and function of the stomach and small intestine.

Treatment of pylorospasm depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. In mild cases, lifestyle modifications such as dietary changes or stress reduction techniques may be effective. Medications such as antacids, proton pump inhibitors, or prokinetic agents may also be prescribed to help relieve symptoms or promote gastric emptying. Prognosis for pylorospasm is generally good, and most people can be managed effectively with appropriate treatment. However, without treatment, chronic or severe cases can lead to complications such as malnutrition or dehydration.
