Polymorphic light eruption (PLE), also known as sun allergy, is a common skin condition that occurs in response to exposure to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It typically affects areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, arms, and chest.

Symptoms of PLE can vary depending on the severity of the reaction, but they usually include a rash or small red bumps on the skin that may be itchy or tender. In more severe cases, blistering or hives may develop. PLE can also cause flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, headache, and nausea.

Treatment for PLE typically involves avoiding sun exposure and using protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and hats, as well as using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. In some cases, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen may be recommended to help relieve symptoms.

If symptoms persist or are severe, prescription-strength topical or oral corticosteroids may be necessary to reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms. In addition, desensitization therapy, which involves gradually exposing the skin to increasing amounts of UV radiation, may be recommended in some cases to reduce the body's sensitivity to sunlight.

Preventing PLE involves taking steps to protect the skin from sun exposure, such as wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen, and avoiding midday sun when UV radiation is strongest. If you develop symptoms of PLE, it is important to seek medical attention to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
