Meningococcal infection - Generics

Meningococcal infection is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. The bacteria can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord) and/or sepsis (bloodstream infection). Meningococcal infection is highly contagious and can spread through respiratory droplets or direct contact with infected individuals.

Symptoms of meningococcal infection can include fever, headache, neck stiffness, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and a rash that does not fade under pressure. If left untreated, meningococcal infection can progress rapidly and cause severe complications, including brain damage, hearing loss, limb amputation, and even death.

Treatment for meningococcal infection typically involves hospitalization and administration of antibiotics and supportive care. Vaccination is also available and highly recommended for individuals at increased risk, such as young children, adolescents, and college students.

Prevention is key in avoiding meningococcal infection. Practicing good hygiene such as washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can help reduce the risk of transmission. Vaccination is also an important preventative measure, and individuals at risk should speak with their healthcare provider about the recommended vaccination schedule.
