Mastitis - Generics

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue, usually caused by a bacterial infection. It commonly occurs in women who are breastfeeding, but can also occur in women who are not breastfeeding. Mastitis typically causes breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. In some cases, it can also cause flu-like symptoms such as fever and fatigue.

Mastitis is caused by bacteria that enter the breast tissue through a cracked or sore nipple or through a milk duct. This can happen when a baby does not latch onto the breast properly or when a woman does not empty her breasts completely during breastfeeding. Other risk factors for mastitis include a history of breast infections, stress, fatigue, smoking, and a weakened immune system.

Treatment for mastitis typically involves antibiotics to clear the bacterial infection. Pain relief medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may also be recommended to help manage pain and fever. In addition, warm compresses and gentle massage can help relieve breast discomfort and promote milk flow.

Preventing mastitis involves practicing good breastfeeding hygiene, such as ensuring that the baby is latching onto the breast properly, avoiding prolonged engorgement, and emptying the breast completely during each feeding. Women who are not breastfeeding should also practice good hygiene and avoid wearing tight-fitting bras or clothing that can cause irritation or blockages in the breast ducts.

In rare cases, mastitis can lead to complications such as an abscess, which is a collection of pus in the breast tissue. Abscesses usually require drainage and may need to be surgically removed in severe cases. It is important to seek medical attention if symptoms of mastitis persist or worsen despite treatment, or if new symptoms such as a lump or discharge from the nipple develop.
