Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. It is caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums.

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Signs of gingivitis include red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Gingivitis can often be reversed with good oral hygiene, such as regular brushing and flossing, along with professional dental cleanings.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. In periodontitis, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that become infected. Over time, the infection can destroy the bone supporting the teeth, leading to tooth loss.

Signs of periodontitis include persistent bad breath, receding gums, loose or shifting teeth, and changes in the bite. Treatment for periodontitis may involve deep cleaning procedures such as scaling and root planing, medication, or even surgery in severe cases.

Prevention of gum disease involves maintaining good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, and routine dental checkups and cleanings. Avoiding tobacco use and eating a healthy diet can also help prevent gum disease.
