Biliary colic - Generics

Biliary colic is a type of pain that occurs in the upper-right abdomen, caused by the temporary obstruction of the bile duct. The bile duct is a tube that carries bile from the liver to the small intestine, where it helps in the digestion of fat.

Biliary colic is most commonly caused by gallstones, which are small, hard deposits that can form in the gallbladder. When a gallstone gets lodged in the bile duct, it can cause a backup of bile, leading to inflammation and pain.

Symptoms of biliary colic include sudden and intense pain in the upper-right abdomen, sometimes radiating to the back or shoulder blade. The pain may come and go, lasting from a few minutes to several hours. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, and indigestion.

Treatment for biliary colic may involve pain management with medication, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids. In some cases, medication may also be used to dissolve gallstones. However, if the biliary colic is caused by a severe blockage or infection, surgery may be necessary to remove the gallbladder or clear the duct.

Prevention of biliary colic involves maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle, as obesity and a high-fat diet can increase the risk of developing gallstones. Additionally, avoiding rapid weight loss or fasting, and managing underlying conditions such as diabetes, can also help reduce the risk of biliary colic.
