“May all be happy, may all be healed, may all be at peace and may no one ever suffer."
Stomatitis is a general term that refers to inflammation of the mouth and lips. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, injuries, and allergies.
Symptoms of stomatitis can include painful sores or ulcers in the mouth, redness or swelling of the gums, and difficulty eating or swallowing. Depending on the cause of the stomatitis, other symptoms may also be present, such as fever, fatigue, or a metallic taste in the mouth.
Common causes of stomatitis include viral infections such as herpes simplex virus, bacterial infections such as streptococcus, fungal infections such as candidiasis, and autoimmune diseases such as lupus or Behcet's disease. Other causes can include exposure to irritants such as tobacco or alcohol, nutritional deficiencies, and reactions to medications or dental materials.
Treatment for stomatitis depends on the underlying cause. In many cases, the condition will resolve on its own within a few days or weeks. Home remedies such as rinsing the mouth with warm salt water or using over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage symptoms. For more severe cases or cases caused by infections, medications such as antivirals, antibiotics, or antifungals may be prescribed. If the stomatitis is caused by an underlying condition such as an autoimmune disease, treatment will focus on managing that condition.
