Aortic aneurysm

An aortic aneurysm is a bulge or weakness in the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. Aortic aneurysms can occur anywhere along the aorta, but most commonly occur in the abdomen.

An aortic aneurysm can develop over time as a result of a weakening in the wall of the aorta, often caused by atherosclerosis (the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries). Other risk factors for aortic aneurysm include high blood pressure, smoking, and a family history of the condition.
