A healthy adult has a body temperature of 98.4 degrees and a pulse rate of 72 beats per minute. As the body heat increases in sick condition, the pulse speed also increases, but from the balance between these two increases, the pulse speed increases 10 times for every degree of heat increase, for example, if the body temperature is 100.4 degrees, the pulse speed will be 92 times. But in malignant fever there is no harmony between fever and pulse.

পুর্ণবয়স্ক ব্যক্তির সুস্থাবস্থায় গায়ের তাপ থাকে ৯৮.৪ ডিগ্রী এবং নাড়ীর গতি থাকে মিনিটে ৭২ বার। অসুস্থ অবস্থায় গাত্ৰতাপ যত বৃদ্ধি পেতে থাকে, নাড়ীর গতিও তত বৃদ্ধি পেতে থাকে কিন্তু এই উভয় বৃদ্ধির মধ্যে সামঞ্জস্য থেকে যে, প্রত্যেক ডিগ্রী উত্তাপ বৃদ্ধিতে নাড়ীর গতি বৃদ্ধি পায় ১০ বার, যেমন গাত্ৰতাপ যদি হয় ১০০.৪ ডিগ্রী নাড়ীর গতি হবে ৯২ বার। কিন্তু দূষিত জ্বরে গাত্রতাপ এবং নাড়ীর গতির মধ্যে কোন সামঞ্জস্য থাকে না।প্লেগ, ডিপথিরিয়া, দুষ্টব্রণ প্রভৃতি যে কোন রােগ বা যে কোন প্রদাহে পাইরােজেন যে কত সুফলপ্রদ তা চিকিৎসক মাত্রেই বিদিত আছেন। গর্ভস্থ সন্তান মরে পচে গিয়ে প্রসূতির শরীরের রক্ত দূষিত হয়ে পড়লেও পাইরােজেনকে ভুলিবেন না।

পাইরােজেনের জিহ্বা সাধারণতঃ মসৃণ, লালবর্ণ ও শুষ্ক অথবা জিহ্বার অগ্রভাগ লালবর্ণ, মধ্যভাগ লেপাবৃত বা ডােরা কাটা। জিহ্বা অস্বাভাবিক বৃহৎ ও পুরু দেখায়।

রােগী একদণ্ড চুপ করে থাকতে পারে না, সহস্র নিষেধ সত্ত্বেও অবিরত কথা কলতে চায় এবং স্বাভাবিক অবস্থা অপেক্ষা অত্যন্ত তাড়াতাড়ি কথা কবলতে থাকে।

দুর্গন্ধ পাইবােজেনের একটি বিশিষ্ট লক্ষণ।

রক্তবমি, জলপান করবার কিছুক্ষণ পরে বমি; বমির সহিত মল নির্গত হতে থাকে, ক্রমাগত বমি, গরম জল খেলে বমির উপশম।
