Ventricular tachycardia - Generics

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a type of arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, that originates in the ventricles of the heart. The ventricles are the two lower chambers of the heart responsible for pumping blood to the rest of the body.

In ventricular tachycardia, the ventricles beat too fast and in a coordinated manner, usually at a rate of over 100 beats per minute. This can disrupt the normal blood flow and lead to decreased blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.

VT can occur in people with underlying heart disease, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, or prior heart attack. Other potential causes of VT include electrolyte imbalances, drug or alcohol use, and certain medications.

Symptoms of VT can vary depending on the individual, but may include palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. In some cases, VT may cause no symptoms and be detected only through routine testing.

Diagnosis of VT typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the heart's electrical activity, along with other imaging tests, such as echocardiography or cardiac MRI. Treatment options may include medications to control the heart rate and rhythm, electrical cardioversion to restore normal heart rhythm, or ablation therapy to destroy the abnormal heart tissue responsible for the arrhythmia. In some cases, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) may be recommended to help prevent sudden cardiac death.

Overall, the prognosis for VT depends on the underlying cause of the arrhythmia and the individual's overall health. With proper management, many people with VT are able to lead normal, healthy lives.
