Hepatitis B virus - Generics

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that primarily affects the liver. It is caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis. The virus is transmitted through exposure to infected blood and other bodily fluids, such as semen and vaginal fluids.

Symptoms of acute hepatitis B can include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Many people with acute hepatitis B will recover without treatment, but some may develop chronic hepatitis B, which can lead to serious liver damage, liver failure, or liver cancer over time.

Treatment of hepatitis B depends on the stage and severity of the infection. In some cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed to slow down the replication of the virus and reduce the risk of liver damage. People with chronic hepatitis B may also require ongoing monitoring and medical care to manage their condition and prevent complications.

Prevention of hepatitis B involves getting vaccinated against the virus, practicing safe sex by using condoms, avoiding sharing needles or other injection equipment, and using precautions to avoid exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids. Vaccination against hepatitis B is recommended for all infants, children, and adults who are at risk of infection, such as healthcare workers, people who inject drugs, and people who have multiple sex partners.
