Chronic renal failure - Generics

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a gradual and irreversible decline in the functioning of the kidneys over time. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste products from the blood, maintaining the body's fluid and electrolyte balance, and producing hormones that help regulate blood pressure and red blood cell production.

CRF can occur as a result of many different causes, including:

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidney's filtering units)
  • Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract
  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus or vasculitis
  • Chronic urinary tract obstruction
  • Long-term use of certain medications or exposure to toxins

Symptoms of CRF may not appear until the disease is well advanced. Some common symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Poor appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Itching
  • Muscle cramps
  • Swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Shortness of breath
  • High blood pressure
  • Changes in urination, such as increased frequency or decreased output

Treatment for CRF aims to slow the progression of the disease, manage symptoms, and prevent complications. Treatment may include:

  • Medications to control blood pressure, reduce swelling, and manage anemia
  • Dietary changes to limit protein, sodium, and potassium intake
  • Fluid restriction
  • Dialysis to filter waste products from the blood and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Kidney transplant

Early detection and treatment of the underlying cause of CRF is important to prevent or delay the onset of the disease. Regular checkups and monitoring of kidney function are also important for those at risk of developing CRF.
