Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - Generics

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in older men where the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, becomes enlarged. As the prostate enlarges, it can press against the urethra, causing difficulty with urination.

Symptoms of BPH may include:

  1. Difficulty starting urination
  2. Weak or interrupted urine flow
  3. Frequent urination, especially at night (nocturia)
  4. Urgency to urinate
  5. Inability to completely empty the bladder
  6. Urinary tract infections

The exact cause of BPH is not known, but it is thought to be related to changes in hormone levels as men age. There may also be a genetic component to the condition.

Diagnosis of BPH is typically based on symptoms and a physical exam, which may include a digital rectal exam to evaluate the size and texture of the prostate gland. Other tests, such as a urine flow test or prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, may also be done to rule out other conditions.

Treatment for BPH may depend on the severity of symptoms and may include lifestyle changes, medications, or surgery. Lifestyle changes may include avoiding caffeine and alcohol, reducing fluid intake before bedtime, and practicing double voiding (urinating twice within a short period of time to empty the bladder more completely). Medications, such as alpha-blockers or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, may be prescribed to help relieve symptoms. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove part of the prostate gland.

It is important for men with symptoms of BPH to seek medical attention to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Left untreated, BPH can lead to complications such as urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder damage.
