Aspergillosis - Generics

Aspergillosis is a group of fungal infections caused by the Aspergillus species, which commonly exist in the environment as mold. Aspergillus is found in soil, plant matter, and decaying organic matter, and it can be inhaled or ingested, causing a variety of infections depending on the patient's immune status.

The most common form of aspergillosis is allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), which occurs in individuals with underlying asthma or cystic fibrosis. Invasive aspergillosis is a more serious form of the infection that occurs in people with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplant recipients. This type of aspergillosis can affect multiple organs and can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of aspergillosis can vary depending on the type of infection but may include fever, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and weight loss. Diagnosis is typically made through a combination of imaging studies, blood tests, and cultures of the affected tissue or body fluid.

Treatment of aspergillosis usually involves antifungal medication, such as voriconazole or amphotericin B, along with supportive care. Invasive aspergillosis may require surgical intervention to remove infected tissue. Prevention measures include reducing exposure to Aspergillus by avoiding moldy environments and wearing appropriate protective gear in certain high-risk occupations.
