ঈথুজা ওষুধটি কথা জানা যাবার আগে শিশুদের কলেরা ইনফ্যান্টাম' নামে বিশেষ এক ধরনের কলেরায় খুব পাতলা মল ও বমি হয়ে বেশির ভাগ শিশুই মারা যেত, কারণ, ঐ ধরনের ভয়াবহ অবস্থা অন্য কোন ওষুধে বিশেষ দেখা যায় না। গ্রীষ্মকালে শিশু কলেরার প্রাদুর্ভাবের সময় শিশুটি দুধে খাওয়াবার একটু পরেই তা পাকস্থলীতে পৌঁছে ছানার মত হয়ে যাবার আগেই আধা ছানা কাটা ও আধা তরল অবস্থায় তা বমি হয়ে উঠে আসে, সঙ্গে পাতলা, হলদেটে সবুজ ও আম মল বেরোয়।

অস্থির, উদ্বেগ, কাঁদে। ইঁদুর, বিড়াল কুকুর প্রভৃতি দেখে, অজ্ঞান, প্রলাপ। চিন্তা করতে অক্ষম, মন সন্নিবিষ্ট করতে পারে না। মস্তিষ্কের দুর্বলতা।

চোখ আলোকাতঙ্ক, মেলিবোমিয়ন গ্রন্থির স্ফীতি, ঘুমের সময় চোখের তারা ঘুরতে থাকে, চোখের তারা বিস্ফারিত। মনে হয় কানের ভিতর গরম কিছু রয়েছে। কানের ভিতর হিসহিস শব্দ হয়।  মুখমণ্ডল ফোলা, লাল-লাল দাগযুক্ত ও শ্রান্ত। মুখবিবর শুষ্ক, মুখের ভিতর ক্ষত! জিহ্বা অতিরিক্ত লম্বা বলে মনে হয়। 

দুধ সহ্য হয় না; দুধ গেলার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বমি অথবা কিছু সময় পরে, দুধ চাকা চাকা ভাবে উঠে আসে। বমির পর ক্ষুধার্ত। খাবার এক ঘন্টা পরে ভুক্ত খাদ্যবস্তুও উঠে আসে। সাদা, ফ্যানাযুক্ত প্রচুর বমি। খাবারের দৃশ্যে বমি। পাকস্থলীতে ছিঁড়ে ফেলার ন্যায় বেদনা, বেদনা অন্ননালী পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত হয় ৷ প্রচণ্ড কোষ্ঠকাঠিণ্য।

স্ত্রীরোগ যৌনাঙ্গে কেটে ফেলার ন্যায় তীব্র বেদনা। ফুসকুড়ি, গরমে চুলকানি । ধাতুস্রাব জলের মত। স্তন গ্রন্থির স্ফীতি, তৎসহ কেটে ফেলার ন্যায় তীব্র বেদনা।

তীব্র বুক ধড়ফড়ানি, তৎসহ মাথাঘোরা, মাথার যন্ত্রণা ও অস্থিরতা। নারী দ্রুত, কঠিন ও ক্ষুদ্র। নিম্নাঙ্গের দুর্বলতা। হাতের আঙ্গুল ও বুড়ো আঙ্গুলগুলি মুষ্টিবদ্ধ। হাত ও পায়ের অবশ ভাব। প্রচণ্ড আক্ষেপ।

ভোর ৩টে থেকে ৪টে, এবং সন্ধ্যায়; গরমে, গ্রীষ্মকালে বৃদ্ধি। লোকজন সঙ্গে ও মুক্ত বাতাসে ভালো থাকে।
