Strabismus - Generics

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes or lazy eye, is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned and do not focus on the same point. This can result in double vision or poor depth perception.

Strabismus can occur in children and adults, and may be caused by a variety of factors including problems with the muscles that control eye movement, nerve damage, or a refractive error such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. In some cases, the cause of strabismus is not known.

Treatment for strabismus depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In some cases, eye exercises or vision therapy can be helpful in strengthening the eye muscles and improving alignment. In other cases, corrective lenses such as glasses or contact lenses may be recommended to correct a refractive error.

In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to adjust the position of the eye muscles and improve alignment. Surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves repositioning the muscles that control eye movement. In some cases, multiple surgeries may be necessary to achieve optimal alignment.

If left untreated, strabismus can lead to amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, which is a condition in which the brain begins to ignore input from one eye, leading to permanent vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment of strabismus is important to prevent this complication and improve overall vision and quality of life.
