Poliomyelitis - Generics

Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the poliovirus. The virus primarily affects the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis, and in severe cases, can cause death.

Polio is transmitted through contact with the feces of an infected person, or through contaminated food or water. The virus mainly affects children under the age of five, but can also infect adults.

Symptoms of polio vary depending on the severity of the infection. Many people who become infected with polio do not develop any symptoms, but some experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, and muscle aches. In more severe cases, the virus attacks the nervous system, causing muscle weakness, paralysis, and in some cases, difficulty breathing or swallowing.

There is no cure for polio, but it can be prevented through vaccination. The polio vaccine has been highly effective in reducing the incidence of the disease, and it is recommended that children receive the vaccine as part of routine immunization schedules.

In areas where polio is still endemic, efforts are being made to vaccinate as many people as possible and to improve sanitation to prevent the spread of the virus. Despite significant progress in eradicating polio, the disease remains a public health concern in some parts of the world.
