Hyperparathyroidism - Generics
Hyperparathyroidism is a condition in which the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH), which regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the body. There are two types of hyperparathyroidism: primary and secondary.
Primary hyperparathyroidism is most commonly caused by a noncancerous tumor on one of the parathyroid glands, leading to excessive production of PTH. Secondary hyperparathyroidism occurs as a result of another underlying condition, such as chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, or malabsorption.
Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism can include:
- Weakness and fatigue
- Bone pain or fractures
- Kidney stones
- Excessive thirst and urination
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Depression or cognitive problems
Hyperparathyroidism can also cause an increase in calcium levels in the blood, which can lead to more severe symptoms such as confusion, coma, or cardiac arrhythmias.
Treatment for hyperparathyroidism depends on the cause and severity of the condition. In cases of primary hyperparathyroidism, surgery to remove the tumor may be necessary. For secondary hyperparathyroidism, treating the underlying condition is the primary focus. Medications such as bisphosphonates or calcimimetics may also be used to help regulate calcium levels and reduce symptoms.
If left untreated, hyperparathyroidism can lead to long-term complications such as osteoporosis, kidney damage, and cardiovascular disease. It is important to have any symptoms evaluated by a healthcare provider and to receive appropriate treatment to prevent these complications from developing.
