Atelectasis - Generics

Atelectasis is a medical condition characterized by the collapse or partial collapse of a lung or a portion of a lung. This occurs when the air sacs in the lung, also known as alveoli, fail to expand properly, leading to reduced or absent gas exchange.

Atelectasis can be caused by various factors such as blockage of the airways, such as from mucus or a foreign object, shallow breathing or decreased lung expansion due to surgery, trauma, or immobility. It can also occur as a result of lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and pneumonia.

Symptoms of atelectasis depend on the severity and extent of lung collapse, but may include shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid breathing, coughing, and decreased oxygen levels. In some cases, atelectasis may not cause any noticeable symptoms.

Treatment for atelectasis involves addressing the underlying cause of lung collapse. This may include deep breathing exercises, coughing, and using devices such as incentive spirometers to promote lung expansion. Removal of any blockages in the airway may also be necessary. Oxygen therapy may be used to increase oxygen levels in the blood. In more severe cases, mechanical ventilation or surgery may be necessary.

Prevention of atelectasis is important, especially for those who are at higher risk, such as people who have had surgery or who have a chronic lung disease. This may involve early mobilization after surgery, smoking cessation, and respiratory exercises to maintain lung function.
