Angiography - Generics

Angiography is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the blood vessels in the body, including arteries, veins, and capillaries. It involves the injection of a contrast agent, or dye, into the bloodstream, which highlights the blood vessels on X-ray images or other imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

There are different types of angiography, including:

  1. Catheter angiography: In this type of angiography, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin or arm and guided to the area of interest. Contrast dye is injected through the catheter, and X-ray images are taken to visualize the blood vessels.
  2. CT angiography: This type of angiography uses a CT scanner to create detailed images of the blood vessels. A contrast dye is injected into a vein in the arm, and the scanner takes images as the dye travels through the blood vessels.
  3. MRI angiography: This type of angiography uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create images of the blood vessels. A contrast dye is injected into a vein in the arm, and the MRI scanner takes images as the dye travels through the blood vessels.

Angiography is used to diagnose a variety of conditions that affect the blood vessels, including blockages, aneurysms, and abnormal blood vessel growths. It can also be used to guide certain medical procedures, such as the placement of a stent or the embolization of a blood vessel to stop bleeding.

While angiography is generally considered a safe and effective imaging technique, there is a small risk of complications such as bleeding, infection, or an allergic reaction to the contrast dye. Your healthcare provider will discuss the benefits and risks of angiography with you prior to the procedure.
