Hyoscine butylbromide is an anticholinergic drug with antispasmodic action on the smooth muscles of various parts of the abdominal cavity. Hyoscine Butylbromide Tablet is indicated for symptoms of visceral spasm in the gastrointestinal tract or genito-urinary tract. It is also indicated in spasmodic dysmenorrhea. Hyoscine butylbromide injection is also indicated in gastro-intestinal spasms and acute renal or biliary pain. Hyoscine butylbromide injection is used in the differential diagnosis of obstruction in radiology, to reduce spasm and pain in pyelography, and to relieve spasm in other diagnostic procedures such as gastro-duodenal endoscopy.

As an injection-
It is contraindicated in patients with prostatic enlargement and should be used with caution in the elderly. The drug is also contraindicated in patients suffering from paralytic ileus or pyloric stenosis. Its use is also contraindicated in patients with glaucoma due to possible mydriatic damage.
Side-effects of hyoscine butylbromide include dry mouth, pupil dilatation, increased intra-ocular pressure, flushing, dry skin, bradycardia followed by tachycardia and eremia. Sometimes fatigue, vomiting, giddiness and staggering may occur.
Caution: Hyoscine can cause tremors and dull mental alertness. Patients who are under treatment with hyoscine should not drive cars or other vehicles or operate any machinery that may cause accidents due to lack of mental concentration. Patients should also refrain from drinking alcohol.
Caution: In thyrotoxicosis, cardiac insufficiency or failure and cardiac surgery, this drug may increase heart rate with caution. Other anticholinergic drugs such as amantadine, some antihistamines, butyrophenone and phenothiazines and the tricyclic antidepressant hyoscine may increase the effect of hyoscine, so in these cases it may be necessary to reduce the dose of hyoscine.

Like other medicines, it should be used with caution during the first trimester of pregnancy.
