Topical corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory, antiarrhythmic and vasoconstrictor properties. Corticosteroids act by stimulating phospholipase A-2 inhibitory proteins—lipectins. These proteins regulate the action of potent inflammatory substances such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of arachidonic acid. Arachidanic acid is produced from the phospholipids of the cell membrane by the action of the enzyme phospholipase A-2.
