Carotid Doppler

Carotid Doppler is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses high-frequency sound waves, or ultrasound, to create images of the carotid arteries in the neck. The carotid arteries are two large blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

During a carotid Doppler test, a handheld device called a transducer is placed on the neck over the carotid artery. The transducer emits sound waves that bounce off the artery and produce images on a computer screen. The images can show the size, shape, and location of any blockages or narrowing (stenosis) in the carotid arteries, which can increase the risk of stroke.

Carotid Doppler is typically used to assess the risk of stroke in individuals who have symptoms such as transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), or in those who have risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure, smoking, or diabetes. The test can help determine if there is a blockage or narrowing in the carotid arteries, which can disrupt blood flow to the brain and increase the risk of a stroke.

Depending on the results of the carotid Doppler test, further testing or treatment may be recommended. Treatment may include medications to reduce the risk of blood clots or surgery to remove plaque buildup in the carotid artery and restore blood flow to the brain. Overall, carotid Doppler is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing the risk of stroke and guiding treatment decisions.
